Welcome to our school!
From early childhood on, we are partners with you to enhance and strengthen the Jewish identity of each student. Our goal is to provide our students with a strong foundation that will enable them to identify proudly and joyously as Jews in a multicultural and multi-ethnic community. Our students learn about Jewish holidays, Hebrew and prayer, Torah, history and culture through interactive activities, games, cooking, music, movement and art.
Note that our weekend meeting schedule shifts over the course of the year to provide a varied learning environment and bring families together in different settings. See below for details.
See below for details about our school curriculum and classes. For any further information, please contact our interim Education Director, Nancy Judson, at 845-454-0570 or educationnj118@gmail.com.
Shalom Tots (Ages 2 to Pre-K)
Shalom Tots is a lively monthly educational and social program for pre-school children and their families. Children learn about Shabbat and holidays through arts and crafts, baking, Hebrew Through Movement, games, music, dance and storytelling. Parents are free to drop their children off (if potty-trained only), or stay and enjoy the fun and learning.
For more information about this program, see Early Childhood Programs.
Gan (Grades K-2)
In our weekly Gan class, our students learn about Jewish holidays and culture, ritual blessings, Torah stories, Hebrew alphabet letter recognition and beginning vocabulary with the Hebrew Through Movement program, hands-on activities, art, singing, dancing and games.
Grades 3 through B’nai Mitzvah
Students in grades 3 through 6 meet twice per week, plus a short weekly online Hebrew tutoring session. Students gain Hebrew skills to read and understand Jewish prayer. They also study Jewish life cycle events, Israel, and the Ten Commandments in a 3 year rotation. Teachers discuss students’ relationship to G-d and Jewish values with them throughout their Pre-B-Mitzvah years. In addition, they continue to participate in hands-on interactive activities focused around the Jewish holiday traditions through fun skits, singing, dancing, and Hebrew Through Movement.
B’nai Mitzvah Program
In addition to attending religious and Hebrew school classes, B’nai Mitzvah Program students work with their individual tutors and our Education Director. These students will be taught prayer leadership and Torah reading. Students demonstrate their mastery by reading a Torah portion as a group on a Shabbat morning in early winter. To prepare for their special day, the class will be on the bimah on Shabbat mornings to help lead the service. Throughout the year, students explore the personal meaning of mitzvot and create ongoing tzedakah projects, both individually and as a class.
More details on our B’nai Mitzvah program can be found here.
Shabbat School
In January, February, and early March, our Religious School meets on Saturdays rather than Sundays. Shabbat School allows us the unique opportunity to celebrate together and experience Shabbat practice and worship together. In addition, students continue their Sunday curriculum with Shabbat friendly activities. Afterward, families are invited to stay and enjoy a hearty Kiddush luncheon.
Schedule
All ages before B’nai Mitzvah age meet either Saturday or Sunday morning throughout the year, except for the weekends following a monthly family Shabbat dinner.
- September – December: Sunday mornings
- January – Mid-March (Shabbat School): Saturday mornings
- Mid-March – May: Sunday mornings
In addition, 3rd grade through B’nai Mitzvah meet Tuesday afternoons online as a class, plus a weekly online Hebrew tutoring session that fits your schedule.
